The next generation of mobile internet, 5G, has arrived in the UK, and according to Professor Mischa Dohler from King’s College London, it’s something consumers and businesses should be excited about.

“5G has the power to create jobs, kick-start the economy and revolutionise industries, including healthcare, education and the arts,” he said. The advent of 5G will not only bring faster speeds, it will also enhance virtual reality experiences and even deliver the power of touch, or real-time haptic feedback across the mobile internet.

The King’s College team working alongside Dohler are Dr Maria Lema (research fellow), Dr Toktam Mahmoodi (senior lecturer), Ali Hosseini (artist and philosopher) and some 20 engineers and computer scientists. Together, they have pioneered a large part of 5G’s technical developments, and they were the first in the UK to demonstrate it.

The King’s College team also worked closely with academic leaders, such as Professor Dimitra Simeonidou from the University of Bristol, and leaders in a variety of sectors, including: transportation, finance, gaming and the arts to see how 5G capabilities can transform the way they run. Unprecedented speeds and fewer delays using ultra-low-latency technology will leave no sector unchanged.

Even nightclubs will undergo radical innovation, with DJs and patrons located in different time zones and venues being able to participate in one single real-time party. “With 5G, new concepts such as synchronised reality or the internet of skills will completely disrupt these industries,” explains Dohler. “5G is only a small piece in a much larger technology movement.”

Through this series of interviews and exclusive insights, Business Reporter is showcasing how King’s College London is pioneering this new technology and transforming industries by leveraging the power of 5G.

Manufacturing without limits – How to improve efficiency with 5G

One of the hottest topics in the Western world is that our productivity is far below the level we need to sustain our standards of life and develop a better future. But the fifth generation of networks changes the game.

How to save our healthcare with 5G

Imagine a world where proper healthcare is available for everybody. In this world, the finest technologies and knowledge of the best specialists reach even the most deprived and distant corners of a country. Not just accurate diagnoses, but even the sophisticated movements of a skilled surgeon’s hands, can be transferred through thousands of miles in milliseconds, as easily as an email. Now all of this is possible with 5G.

Art and education without borders – 5G empowers thinkers and game-changers

Freedom is both a fundamental need and the ultimate aim of culture, education and travel. Students, performers and educators want to grow and live in a world where ideas flow without borders. The fifth generation of wireless networks can tear down those borders.
